About West Bengal Police

The West Bengal Police was restructured below provisions of the Police Act 1861 in the course of the British Raj. It is controlled by an officer nominated as the Director General of Police who reports to the State Govt. thru the Home (Police) Depart. Shri GM Prabhu Rajasekhar Reddy, an IPS officer of year 1982 batch is the DG and IGP of West Bengal Police since 1st October, 2013.

The West Bengal Police has dominion concurrent with the eighteen revenue districts of State (exclusive of the metropolitan city Kolkata) which includes one of the 2 general police districts of West Bengal as below the Police Act 1861. The other general police district comprises of the major shares of the metropolitan part of Kolkata, and has a distinct police force (Kolkata Police) established and managed under the Calcutta Police Act 1866 and Calcutta (Suburban Police) Act 1866. This prearrangement, exclusive in India, was considered during colonial times while Calcutta was the capital of British India. The urban police have been kept self-governing of the state police force.

The police admin in the state is distributed into 3 police zones and a Govt. Railway Police (GRP) Zone, each controlled by an Inspector General of Police. Each Zone contains of one or more Ranges controlled by an officer chosen as the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
